Video Production: Learning the Ropes from the Best

Watching movies is definitely one of your past time activities. No doubt. Whether you are spending it in a cozy sprawling theatre or in your own home, surely every time spent is worth the time and money. Have you ever tried entertaining the idea of seeing your name appearing on movie credits? If you do then you must have the passion and the knack for filmmaking. You don’t have to be the director right away like Steven Spielberg or screenwriter like actor-writers Matt Damon and Ben Afleck; nevertheless the passion to follow their footsteps could be one of the driving forces to get you there. After all these big names in Tinseltown had earned for themselves an Oscar. So why not try your luck?

There is more to Hollywood than just acting but of course honing your thespian skill is a great advantage in making your own name in this field. However, if you’re not cut out to play in front of the camera then perhaps you can try working from behind, which is as rewarding as acting. Yes in movie making there are many people working both in the production and post-production stages, which are all behind the camera and more often than not there will always be one job waiting for you.

Learning how the pros work and working under their turf are your sure-ticket to get an entry-level position in filmmaking. Different people take different routes to a successful career in the movie industry as a filmmaker. Some have scraped off their last penny to enroll in prestigious film schools to get a degree in video production.  Trying the craft in making movies is a very promising career. With the advent of digital films, almost everybody can now start making a movie on their own. There is no need to enroll in one of those film schools offering degrees and short courses. Nonetheless, getting the feel of the industry generally can be best attained through any of these film institutes.

If you don’t pass in acting workshops don’t lose hope because you can still carve your own niche by being one of these positions listed below. Perhaps you will be the next big name in the filmmaking industry.

Ace Cinematographer. It has been said that a movie is composed of so many running pictures. The cinematographer tells the story even before the actors speak their lines. If you like toying with the camera taking photographs, now is your chance to make a career as a cinematographer. This time though you are now in charge with a bigger camera: the motion picture camera.

You will have the freedom to capture the best shots of the most interesting places, people, and events. While the director of the film is in charge of the acting of the artists and some other aspects of the film the cinematographer is working closely with the director to ensure that the artistic aspect is in consonance with the overall plot of the film.

After the final stage of the shooting, the artists can now rest, but the cinematographer is still working round the clock in the post- production stage of the film. Cinematographers make the film laboratories as their second home because more than anywhere else, these are where they spend much of their time trying to see the intricate details of the film, making sure they are perfectly put in their proper places.

while others fresh from high school have tried other ways to get into the business. These people have worked for free with some of the greatest and respected names in the industry. Of course they don’t get it right away. They first enroll in short courses then work as an apprentice. Local television stations can be a great place to start to get on the job training.  One high school graduate working in Tampa Video Production, actually did this and went on to win an Emmy Award for his video journalism.  They spend more time learning hands-on than those students spending more time listening to their professors inside the classroom. Either way, you are on your first step to enter the world of filmmaking.
