Video Production: Learning the Ropes from the Best

Watching movies is definitely one of your past time activities. No doubt. Whether you are spending it in a cozy sprawling theatre or in your own home, surely every time spent is worth the time and money. Have you ever tried entertaining the idea of seeing your name appearing on movie credits? If you do then you must have the passion and the knack for filmmaking. You don’t have to be the director right away like Steven Spielberg or screenwriter like actor-writers Matt Damon and Ben Afleck; nevertheless the passion to follow their footsteps could be one of the driving forces to get you there. After all these big names in Tinseltown had earned for themselves an Oscar. So why not try your luck?

There is more to Hollywood than just acting but of course honing your thespian skill is a great advantage in making your own name in this field. However, if you’re not cut out to play in front of the camera then perhaps you can try working from behind, which is as rewarding as acting. Yes in movie making there are many people working both in the production and post-production stages, which are all behind the camera and more often than not there will always be one job waiting for you.

Learning how the pros work and working under their turf are your sure-ticket to get an entry-level position in filmmaking. Different people take different routes to a successful career in the movie industry as a filmmaker. Some have scraped off their last penny to enroll in prestigious film schools to get a degree in video production.  Trying the craft in making movies is a very promising career. With the advent of digital films, almost everybody can now start making a movie on their own. There is no need to enroll in one of those film schools offering degrees and short courses. Nonetheless, getting the feel of the industry generally can be best attained through any of these film institutes.

If you don’t pass in acting workshops don’t lose hope because you can still carve your own niche by being one of these positions listed below. Perhaps you will be the next big name in the filmmaking industry.

Ace Cinematographer. It has been said that a movie is composed of so many running pictures. The cinematographer tells the story even before the actors speak their lines. If you like toying with the camera taking photographs, now is your chance to make a career as a cinematographer. This time though you are now in charge with a bigger camera: the motion picture camera.

You will have the freedom to capture the best shots of the most interesting places, people, and events. While the director of the film is in charge of the acting of the artists and some other aspects of the film the cinematographer is working closely with the director to ensure that the artistic aspect is in consonance with the overall plot of the film.

After the final stage of the shooting, the artists can now rest, but the cinematographer is still working round the clock in the post- production stage of the film. Cinematographers make the film laboratories as their second home because more than anywhere else, these are where they spend much of their time trying to see the intricate details of the film, making sure they are perfectly put in their proper places.

while others fresh from high school have tried other ways to get into the business. These people have worked for free with some of the greatest and respected names in the industry. Of course they don’t get it right away. They first enroll in short courses then work as an apprentice. Local television stations can be a great place to start to get on the job training.  One high school graduate working in Tampa Video Production, actually did this and went on to win an Emmy Award for his video journalism.  They spend more time learning hands-on than those students spending more time listening to their professors inside the classroom. Either way, you are on your first step to enter the world of filmmaking.

HDTV Basics

Many people have chosen Direct View HDTVs because of all the types of HD television available, they are the least expensive to buy although the largest screen size available is 40 inches. Some people select this option when considering purchasing a high-definition television because it works with a technology that most people are familiar with, the cathode-ray tube (CRT).

This is the same technology that powers all of the standard analog television sets, but when used in a high definition set the result is a huge size; many of these units weigh 300 pounds or more. Today the relatively low prices for direct view displays is being challenged by the decline in price for plasma and LCD display which are becoming increasingly popular with consumers.

When you purchase a Direct View HDTV you will own an electronic that uses a revolutionary technology, providing you with several advantages over standard analog television. But owning this technology brings with it the need to maintain it carefully so it can continue to operate at peak performance for many years and maximize your return on this substantial investment in an HDTV system. Here are a few pointers on things you need to do to extend the life of your Direct View HDTV.

Do you Youtube?

And so you should! Uploading videos to Youtube is a lot of fun. But then sharing your videos with your friends has always been a bit of a hassle due to the unwieldy, long URLs. Until now that is!

Just head on over to VideoGuru.org, enter your Youtube ID in the search box and all your latest videos will be displayed on one page. Just one URL to ‘copy & paste’ to your friends!

You can also search for videos on almost any topic (remembering that Youtube does not allow videos with pornographic content). Definitely a very useful website.

Meet Helen - Your New Online Teacher

Stanley Kubrik’s HAL 9000 may have been smart enough to run the spaceship
Discovery, but HAL lacked one thing today’s computers may soon have—a face.
Computers, long plagued by the impersonality of a box with speakers and
programmer’s graphics, will soon have a face and attitude compatible with their
users.

A one-on-one teacher just for you

For simplicity’s sake, we’ll assign a name to our computer’s new face and call her
Helen (of course, you’ll be able to name him/her anything you like). Helen will smile
at you, move around, even make you laugh. She’ll have an angelic voice, calming
hand gestures and more expressions than Marcel Marceu. But most importantly,
she’ll encourage you to learn—everything and anything—from French to forensics.

Helen will have “soul”

Researchers in the areas of instructional technology, human-computer interaction
and psychology have determined that computers can be more persuasive if they
have a visual identity and “soul.” Thus, they have designed what they call an
effective “pedagogical agent,” an animated, three- dimensional character that serves
as the “face” (and “interface”) of the computer, one that can mimic human emotional
expressions, nonverbal communication and interactions.

You’ll want to bring her an apple

Helen will be the perfect teacher. She’ll interact with you, adapt to your strengths
and weaknesses, even provide emotional and cognitive feedback. Far better than
Microsoft Word’s annoying and intrusive paperclip ‘Clippy,’ Helen will engage you
and help you focus on the task at hand. And unlike a human mentor, Helen’s age,
ethnicity, personality, mannerisms, and interactive style will be matched to your
preferences to encourage learning. In short, you’ll have that “favorite teacher” who
got you through math or chemistry.

She’ll do everything but send you to detention

Helen will evaluate your understanding throughout your “e-class,” just like a human
teacher, and she’ll adapt the lesson plan accordingly. She won’t move on to more
sophisticated concepts until it’s clear you’ve grasped the basics. If you don’t, she’ll
continue with the basics until you “get it.” And if that means prompting you to ask
questions, she’ll do that too, offering encouragement, memorable examples, even a
clever joke or two to keep you interested. You’ll get to know Helen much like you
would a really interesting teacher. She’ll have a colorful personality, reveal her life
history and specific areas of knowledge and skills—in short, she’ll be really cool.
Best of all, she’ll always be up to date on the subject at hand, tirelessly absorbing
the latest research or historic tomes on the subject being taught.

Helen won’t make you stand in the corner

Helen will let you learn at your own pace in a low-pressure learning environment.
She’ll project enthusiasm and support when you get the right answer; yet, unlike a
real classroom filled with peers, you won’t be embarrassed if you fail to grasp a
concept or answer incorrectly. Finally, teachers like Helen can be set up to act as
coaches or disciplined instructors—teaching everything from the history of art to
advanced calculus.

So prepare yourself for the brave new world of computer learning. Your favorite
teacher will make sure you get an A in class and an E for effort. And yes, you can
chew gum in class, as long as you give Helen your due attention.
