7 Basic Headline Writing Tips That Can Lead To Fortunes!

Headlines attract attention. Headlines generate interest. The time spent writing headlines can pay you back many times over.

Do you have a product or service to sell? How do you attract new customers, clients, prospects, leads or patients?

Most likely you attract them through the written word in some sort of advertising, articles, or press release. In each case you need a headline.

In fact, every printed document you publish should have a headline on it. Yes, even including your business card, if you have one!

So, what should go in your headline? Below are six headline ideas that have proved profitable in the past. Remember the goal of the headline is to stop your reader dead in their tracks and get them to read further in to your sales copy.

1). Answer the question, “What’s In It For Me?”

Offer the reader a big benefit or promise if they continue reading. Here are a few examples:

  • The Secret of Making People Like You
  • Who Else Wants A Screen Star Figure?
  • You Can Laugh At Money Worries - If You Follow This Simple Plan
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People
  • Discover The Fortune That Lies Hidden In Your Salary

The promise can be either explicit or implied, but it must be clear to the reader.

2). Tightly target your headlines.

Don’t write your headline to everyone. A headline written to everyone in reality is written to no one. Grab the attention of a very specific target audience by mentioning them by name. Here are some examples of tightly targeted headlines.

  • Debt Got You Down? You Can Laugh At Money Worries - If You Follow This Simple Plan!
  • To People Who Want To Write - But Can’t Get Started!

So, what’s an e-zine?

Technically they’re written e-zine (not ezine) although calling
them an electronic newsletter e-news or Internet newsletter
i-news clarifies what they are much better. They were given the
name e-zine (short for electronic magazine). Some people
pronounce the e-zeen and others say e-zin - however way you
write it or say it, an e-zine should be a special e-mail, sent
to you because you requested it.

E-zines are one way to build communities and relationships with
a potentially large number of people, for a minimal cost.
Instead of sending out a business newsletter, via postal mail,
you can send anyone who requests, your e-zine.

An e-zine can consist of one tip or they can include tips,
articles, ad’s, class information, suggestions, and more. They
can be sent out daily, weekly or monthly. Quarterly e-zines are
OK for organizations with paid memberships, but I don’t
recommend them otherwise. People who receive e-zines less than
once a month are apt to forget they subscribed and may think
you’re S*pamming them. I know that you don’t want to get accused
of that!

Formatting your e-zine is up to you, so decide what’s best for
you and your clients before you start.

Humor on the Web: Being Funny Can Make the Sale

Former New York governor, Alfred E. Smith is quoted as saying “If you can make people laugh, you can make them think, and make them like and believe you.”

The BBC says a regular Web user has the attention span of a goldfish. Nine seconds. Are you still reading? Congratulations. You’re a biped. But now what?

Growing evidence shows that… I don’t need to cite scientific studies. We all know that people like to laugh. But did you know that humor in your company’s Web content can actually strengthen your brand identity, improve customer relations and even help make the sale? Being funny has clear benefits, among them the Four R’s:

  • Reason
  • Relaxation
  • Rapport
  • Retention

Reason

There’s enough writing on the Web that if you read 24 hours a day for the rest of your life, you won’t even scratch the surface. People with limited time–like your customers–are very selective in what they’ll take the time to read. Mostly, they just scan a page. Therefore, you must give them a compelling reason to slow down and savor every word.

Relaxation

Do you like to shop while the salesman breathes down your neck? People have enough stress without you adding to it with a high-pressure sales speech. While you want a sense of urgency, you’re more likely to win a person over with a more laid-back approach. And one way to make them relax is to give them a smile.

Rapport

Humor builds rapport with your customers. The Web is a one-to-one communication. When a customer has an “Aha” moment, that second when she “gets it,” a connection is made. Humor open lines of communication on a personal, genuine level.

Retention

People remember what makes them laugh, because it’s a good memory.

Many executives shy away from humor for fear of offending someone, or demeaning their brand. But look at that most famous measure of advertising effectiveness, the Super Bowl ad. Most of them are built to make us laugh. Humor is a great marketing tactic. It plays an important part in daily life. Why not use it to grow your business?

The Power of the Newsletter - Solidifying Customer Relationships with Captivating, Relevant, Durable

You’ve worked hard to gain your customers’ business and want to
explore ways to strengthen your relationship with them while
informing them of important news and information. One proven
method of maintaining regular contact with existing and
potential customers is by distributing a company newsletter. But
wait! Before you begin developing your first issue, don’t make
the common mistake of thinking your newsletter is another
opportunity to “sell” more products and services. Newsletters
are NOT ads; what’s more, if you make the mistake of treating
your newsletter like an advertisement you will not only turn off
many of your valued customers, you will risk destroying that
coveted trust that you’ve worked so hard to develop.

Think of your newsletter as an intangible agreement you make
with your customers. They’re living up their end of the
agreement by opening your newsletter and scanning it for
information that is relevant to them; your end of the agreement
is to deliver content that your customers will find engaging,
relevant and pertinent to their needs. If they enjoy the read,
if they learn something new, if they’re left with a positive
feeling, then your newsletter has succeeded in boosting their
perception of your company and they will likely purchase more
products and services from your organization in the future.

The trick to writing effective newsletter content is to stick to
what you know best and share your knowledge and experience with
your customers. Don’t assume that your customers will know what
you consider basic information - it’s amazing how much knowledge
and experience business owners simply take for granted. Think of
your newsletter as an opportunity to share your expertise and
teach what you have learned about your products and your
industry. When assembling the content, ask yourself if the
information you are assembling will be helpful, interesting and
useful to your customers in some way.

INCOMPAS can assist you in writing and producing your own
effective newsletter content, or we can edit your existing
newsletter and offer constructive advice on how to strengthen
your editorial product. To get you started, we’ve developed a
step-by-step guide to assist you in producing a winning
newsletter.

—————————————————————–
—————

Step-by-Step Plan for Developing Durable Newsletter Content

1) Be in tune with your audience - Always put yourself in your
readers’ shoes by thinking about what matters to them. What are
their most frequently asked questions when it comes to your
products and services? Ask your customers about what issues
matter most to them. Hold a brainstorm session with your
colleagues and talk to your sales, administrative and technical
staff - the front line for your customers; ask them what they
think is on your customers’ minds.

2) Build a solid foundation - Decide how many pages your
newsletter will be and think carefully about how often you can
realistically produce an issue. Develop a budget, and be
realistic about the time and expense required to assemble,
write, design, edit and distribute each issue of a newsletter.
Assemble the team you will require to help you develop and
maintain a quality newsletter. Ideally, you will have an editor
in place to manage and deliver polished content and a designer
to establish and maintain a distinct, refined look.

3) Establish an editorial calendar - Plan your issues in
advance, develop an editorial calendar and decide on a
production schedule. Give your contributors plenty of lead time
and clearly written writers guidelines, including word count
expectations and photo requirements. Because you will likely
depend on volunteers to contribute to your newsletter, realize
that the only person who will respect imposed deadlines will be
you. Allow plenty of time in your production schedule to allow
for unexpected delays.

4) Develop centralized themes - Start by grouping your
newsletter content around a central theme that will tie all
articles together. Working to a theme will help you focus your
content and will help your readers better relate to your
company, products and services. When structuring your
newsletter, start with one or two short feature articles (such
as a customer testimonial or case study, or an article examining
a current, newsworthy issue) and follow with regular departments
reporting product, company and industry news, and providing
seasonal advice, tips & tricks, frequently asked questions
(faqs), training, trends, etc. Ask a leader in your organization
to write a column each issue, and place this column in a
prominent position in your newsletter, preferably immediately
following your “lead” feature. Once you establish a newsletter
structure, follow it every issue to give your readers a greater
feeling of continuity and brand recognition. Don’t forget to
leave space for a linking Table of Contents or a box explaining
what’s inside.

5) Focus on content first - Don’t let fancy graphics and
colourful images distract you from delivering engaging, relevant
content. Develop the content first and ensure the newsletter’s
design supports and highlights your message. When writing,
remember that newsletter articles should be short and direct;
place all of your most important information in the first
sentence or paragraph if you can. If an article requires a more
in-depth approach, write a short newsletter introduction and
summary highlighting the main points of the story, and provide a
link to a more detailed article in your website. This option
will enable you to populate your newsletter with a variety of
quick-read articles, drive traffic to your site while allowing
anyone interested to read on for more information, and build on
the trusted relationship that you have established by delivering
a relevant, interesting and entertaining newsletter.

6) Use active voice - Don’t get lost in passive land! Keep your
sentence structure short, snappy and active. Passive voice can
be tricky to spot; watch your word order, since a passive
construction presents the object first and the subject last. For
example, “ABC Corporation designed the new widgets to improve
efficiency” is a more effective than “The new widgets were
designed by ABC Corporation in an effort to improve efficiency.”
Also when writing, always ask yourself, ‘who cares?’ and ‘why is
this information important to my audience/customers?’ Place
contact and other support information in sidebars, giving your
readers quick visual reference points.

7) Write an attention-grabbing subject line - When distributing
your newsletter by e-mail, your subject line should tie directly
to a specific headline article in your newsletter, and - most
importantly - it must stand out distinctively amidst the
multitude of subject lines in your recipients’ Inboxes. Your
subject line should also give your readers a clear idea of the
main theme and subject matter of your newsletter.
8) Provide opt-in options - Manage subscriber expectations right
from the start by explaining to your readers the editorial focus
and purpose of your newsletter, as well as the value your
readers can expect to receive by receiving and reading it.
Provide a link to back issues to give people an idea of the
general nature of your newsletter, and give them options to
unsubscribe from receiving your newsletter electronically or in
print form. Follow the standard rules that dictate distribution
of responsible permissions-based e-mail practices.

9) Read up on your competition - Reading newsletters produced by
your competitors and other industry participants will help you
generate new ideas, and stay abreast of what people in your
industry are talking about. If your competitor covers a topic of
great importance to your industry, it is perfectly acceptable
for you to cover that topic as well; for best results, wait a
few issues and approach the issue from a completely different
perspective.

10) Seek reader feedback - First, talk to your customers about
the articles you’re developing and ask their permission to
publish their comments in your article. Watch to see how people
scan your newsletter. Talk with a new sampling of readers after
each issue, and conduct regular formal readership surveys.
Monitor click-through rates and use web analytics to help you
track reader response to the articles you present, and use this
information to guide you as you develop future issues. Don’t be
afraid to get a little controversial. Establish a strong
editorial voice and an open forum, and get people talking by
inviting your readers into the dialogue.

Truth or Lie: Fiction vs. Memoir–How Memoir Writers Can Approach Truth and Healing

The recent flap about James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces has
hit the media with a big bang, bringing the age-old debate about
what is acceptable when writing memoir–a “real” story. Every
time a memoir is released that gains media attention this debate
is raised. Mary Karr, The Liar’s Club, Jennifer Lauck,
Blackbird, and Vivian Gornick, Fierce Attachments, all defended
their memoirs in various medias, and all said that some
recreations of actual reality had to occur in order to write the
story and make it interesting.

As a memoir teacher, I find that people are very worried about
the ethical issues involved in memoir writing. For example, the
writers ask such questions as, “what if I don’t remember the
exact conversation when my mother died,” or “I don’t know what
clothes I was wearing the day my father went away forever.” I am
always moved by these innocent, caring questions, because the
writer is trying very hard to be truthful and accurate, and not
leave any room to be accused of dishonesty.

In my memoir Don’t Call Me Mother I researched the time the
train arrived in Perry, Oklahoma to make sure the scene I was
painting and the conflict with my grandmother about how long
she’d kept my father waiting at the train station–three hours!
was accurate. My memory told me it was a long time, but finding
the time of scheduled arrival made me feel great–memory was not
all I was drawing upon to create a story that would be taken
seriously as “real.” In fact, when I began writing the stories
that eventually turned into my memoir, I was calling it
“fiction,” but the writing group challenged me about how
unrealistic it was that a mother would act the way my mother
acted, and that my grandmother was portrayed as “too over the
top,” thus unbelievable. My answer was, “but it was all true.”
Their response: “It doesn’t matter what is true in fiction, but
it does for memoir.”

I realized that the power of the story I was going to tell was
that it was true, and I did my best to recreate scenes that
delivered the truth. Naturally, childhood memory is subjective,
any memory is subjective, but over the years, as I talked with
people who knew parts of the story and visited locations where
the story took place, I discovered that indeed I had remembered
very well, and I had not made things up in my mind. However, I
am sure that if my grandmother and mother were alive to
challenge what I wrote, they would have another point of view.

In order to reach out to the reading public and go beyond
private journaling, a memoir writer must create a story that has
a shape, drama, and story arc. This may mean constructing a
scene that conflates time, or adds costumes to our characters
that they may or may not have worn, but our job is to be as
accurate and as honest as we can be. If we change the plot of
our lives because another plot would be more interesting to the
publisher, we are in the realm of fiction. If we say we had
relationships we didn’t have because it would make a better
story, we need to call it fiction.

A memoir writer needs to write a first draft that sifts through
the happenings, feelings, and challenges and get them down on
the page–a draft that is healing and purging–and important
work.

Publishing is another stage. The writer must ask many questions
of the work–how much to include, what is the shape of the book,
and how to write it so others can identify and understand.

What to say about James Frey? None of us can know for sure what
went on for him as he constructed his book, and what he
remembered. On January 15, Mary Karr wrote a piece in the New
York Times about memoir writing and she had this to say,

“Call me outdated, but I want to stay hamstrung by objective
truth, when the very notion has been eroding for at least a
century. When Mary McCarthy wrote ‘Memoirs of a Catholic
Girlhood’ in 1957, she felt obliged to clarify how she recreated
dialogue. In her preface, she wrote: ‘This record lays a claim
to being historical - that is, much of it can be checked. If
there is more fiction in it than I know, I should like to be set
right.’”

Mary went on to talk about how much she learned, and how healing
it was when she didn’t make passages in her book more
“interesting” or shape them into a slightly different story. “If
I’d hung on to my assumptions, believing my drama came from
obstacles I’d never had to overcome - a portrait of myself as
scrappy survivor of unearned cruelties - I wouldn’t have learned
what really happened. Which is what I mean when I say God is in
the truth.”

What a great idea–as we write memoir we are reaching for
something beyond our conscious selves. In the river of
creativity and the search for truth, there are forces beyond us
moving us along to a place we didn’t even know about, a place of
healing and resolution. We can hope that James Frey also has
found, or is finding, a resolution for his suffering, and that
all memoir writers do the same, by wrestling with what truth is,
and writing it out with a full voice.

Quick note on World Rally Championships

I have been studying the World Rally Championships (WRC to you and me) and have been writing for a magazine about the classic stars of motor racing. The articles also go to a motoring blog (not the jumped one) but I am most proud that I have had the chance to investigate a huge range of racing stars.

From the obvious hakonen to Colin McRae I have looked at over 20 motor racing stars and come to the conclusion that its a difficult fate to be good at driving fast, yes there’s cool bits but its also stressful, risky and fast paced!!!

The milkybar kid is strong and tough…like an rc car?

It has come to light after a recent survey that children these days are tending to opt for more and more random pastimes - from hurdles to high jump kids used to opt for the more sporty options but because of computer games and the internet age it appears these sports are lacking the fun element.

Enter Remote Control Car Racing - Yes its not great exercise - but it promotes outside time and does involve running to flip the car back over etc. I would highly recommend buying an electric remote control car for your kid - petrol ones tend to be smelly and have a lot more potential risk associated with them. I mean theres nothing wrong with buying a 2nd hand petrol rc car - but if its a kid, petrol and fast racing I don’t know how sensible that is?

I brought a cool little electric rc car for dave this christmas - it does 60kmph, which is pretty cool if you ask me..I suppose we will have to wait and see what he thinks!!!
